Health and Fitness Today

When it comes to our health and fitness, there’s a lot a stake. It’s a literal matter of life and death, after all, so we owe it to ourselves to make the best of this life we have. Poor health can lead to a shorter life and a lower quality of life, so we have to take it upon ourselves to lead healthier and happier lives. However, many of the hurdles (get it?) to our health in the modern world are insidious threats born out of convenience and luxury. So, how do we fight these unseen boogeymen? Here are a few tips to help you survive a world that’s trying to kill you with kindness.

First and foremost, let’s talk about your diet. We Americans depend entirely too heavily on processed food items, such as fast food and junk food. These affordable and convenient food items get those benefits from the very sources that make the nutritionally bankrupt. Namely, additives like preservatives and fillers take away from a given food item’s nutritional value. Therefore, we need to eliminate these items from our diet to the fullest extent possible. That is to say that they should be consumed sparingly, but I won’t begrudge anyone their creature comforts to maintain morale and sanity, so feel free to have those M&M’s you love so much every once in awhile, but don’t chow down on them every day. Instead, you should try to eat as much home cooked food as you can made with fresh ingredients. This may cost you more time in the kitchen and more money out of your bank account, but it’s well worth it. You’ll see immediate benefits, such as more energy, as well as more long term benefits, such as weight loss, and your body will thank you.

Then, there’s the dreaded matter of exercise. When it comes to exercise, the first hurdle (tee hee) is finding a workout routine that works for you, so you’ll need to identify your strengths and weaknesses and do some research. Then, the hard part is simply sticking with the workout regimen you’ve established. The thing about exercise is that you’re trying to fail, because you can only improve through failure. This doesn’t always sit well with people, so many of us get frustrated and give up.Just remember that blowing through your workout without breaking a sweat means you’re wasting your time and you’re not improving. “No pain, no gain,” as they say.
